Call for Nominations: 2016 UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education (USD 100,000 Prize)

UNESCO is now inviting Member States and non-governmental organizations in official partnership with UNESCO to submit nominations for candidates who have effectively promoted the advancement of girls’ and women’s education. Please note that self-nominations will not be considered.


On International Women’s Day, UNESCO is launching a call for nominations to the first edition of the new UNESCO Prize for girls’ and women’s education.

The annual Prize honours outstanding innovation and contributions made by individuals, institutions and organizations to advance girls’ and women’s education. It is the first UNESCO Prize of this nature and is unique in showcasing successful projects that improve and promote the educational prospects of girls and women and in turn, the quality of their lives.

Prize(s)

Supported by the Government of the People’s Republic of China, the Prize is conferred on two laureates awarded with USD 50,000 each, to recognize their exceptional contributions and support their work in advancing education for girls and women.

Eligibility

Candidates shall have made outstanding innovation in and significant contributions to supporting and/or promoting girls’ and women’s education. Prizes may be conferred upon individuals, institutions, or non-governmental organizations that have effectively promoted the advancement of girls’ and women’s education, with a focus on, for example:

• girls’ transition from primary education to lower-secondary education and their completion of full basic education;
• adolescent girls’ and young women’s acquisition of literacy skills;
• creating gender-responsive and safe teaching-learning environments, free of school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV);
•  the development of gender-responsive teaching attitudes and practices among teachers;
• and adolescent girls’ and young women’s acquisition of knowledge and skills to help their smooth transition from school to work and lead a fulfilling life

Selection Process

The Prize winners will be selected by the Director-General of UNESCO on the basis of recommendations made by an international Jury of five recognized experts in the area of girls’ and women’s education. The 2016 edition of the Prize will be awarded at an official ceremony to be held in China.

Application Process

• Application form: download the application form from UNESCO’s girls and women education website, and complete the form either in English or in French;
• Supporting materials: applicants are encouraged to include relevant supporting materials such as videos, publications, CD-ROMs etc.;
• Written recommendation: all applications must be accompanied by a written recommendation of a government entity of the Member State or a non-governmental organization in official partnership with UNESCO;
• Submission:  all applications must be submitted through National Commissions or non-governmental organizations in official partnership with UNESCO. National Commissions or non-governmental organizations in official partnership with UNESCO are requested to ensure that all applications received

2016 UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence ($100,000 Prize)

Description: 

UNESCO invites governmental and non-governmental entities, civil society actors and individuals active in strengthening foundations for peace and tolerance to propose candidates for the 2016 UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence.


Its purpose is to reward individuals, institutions and other entities or non-governmental organizations that have made exceptional contributions and demonstrated leadership in the promotion of tolerance and non-violence.

About the Prize:

The Prize was established in 1995 on the occasion of the United Nations Year for Tolerance and the 125th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi. It was also the year when UNESCO Member States adopted the Declaration of Principles on Tolerance. The creation of the Prize has been inspired by the ideals of UNESCO’s Constitution that proclaims that “peace, if it is not to fail, must be founded on the intellectual and moral solidarity of mankind”.

Prize(s)

Awarded every two years, on the occasion of the International Day for Tolerance (16 November), the Prize is marked by a ceremony and the winner is presented with the sum of US$ 100,000.

Nominations for the Prize should be submitted by filling out the nomination form in either English or French, no later than 29 February 2016, by post or by e-mail.

UNESCO Global Design Contest For World Press Freedom Day 2016

 

Description:

On World Press Freedom Day on the 3 May 2016, UNESCO wants to put a spot light on the importance of freedom of information and the need to create a culture of openness and transparency by running a contest to create the “global look” for the visual identity of WPFD2016. 

The global thematic of the WPFD 2016 is “This Is Your Right! Access to Information and Fundamental Freedoms” 

UNESCO is looking for designs that encapsulate the idea of culture of openness and transparency. It should consider that everyone should have the rights to publicly held information (except in very specific cases) and that access to quality information has the potential to improve quality of life. 

About UNESCO:

UNESCO is the United Nations specialized agency with the mandate to protect freedom of expression: an essential condition for democracy, development and human dignity. UNESCO oft quoted famous founding words states that since wars begin in the minds of men and women, it is in the minds of men and women that the defences of peace must be constructed.

Eligibility:

The contest is open to all interested designers.

Requirements:

*UNESCO is looking for designs that encapsulate the idea of culture of openness and transparency.

*It should consider that everyone should have the rights to publicly held information (except in very specific cases) and that access to quality information has the potential to improve quality of life. 

Note:

The winning design must be adaptable to different formats including for usage on UNESCO website banner, social media networks, standing banner (roll-up banner), A3-ratio print poster, A4-size booklet, conference badges, and interview backdrop. It should also factor in that the final design will be made in the six official languages of UNESCO (English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, and Russian)

Technical note:

All design must be in vector format and be submitted to UNESCO in A4-size (portrait)

Once selected, the winning designer must be able to work with UNESCO to adapt the winning design into various formats including UNESCO website banner, social media networks, standing banner (roll-up banner), A3-ratio print poster, A4-size booklet, conference badges, and interview backdrop.

Prize:

*Winner of the competition will be remunerated to create the “global look” for World Press Freedom Day 2016 for print and online uses.

*Honourable mention for the top 19 submissions. Selected submissions will be featured on UNESCO’s dedicated website for the Day.

UNESCO/Israel (MASHAV) Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme (2016)

Description:

In order to promote human resource capacities in the developing countries through intensive training and to enhance international understanding and friendship among peoples of the world and the people of Israel, the Government of Israel is placing at the disposal of UNESCO

a number of fellowships for the benefit of certain Member States (especially the least developed countries) within the framework of the UNESCO Fellowship Programme.

Beneficiaries of these fellowships will be given the opportunity of participating in a variety of training courses in Israel, conducted under the sponsorship of the MASHAV, Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation.

Who can apply?

Host Institution: The Aharon Ofri International Training Centre, Ramat Rachel, Jerusalem.

Aims of the Programme.

To train participants to successfully:

*Create a relationship of mutual trust with youth in order to enable their reintegration into the educational system; 

* Help individual youths develop and realize their potential so that they may help themselves and their society; 

* Reduce alienation from the community and society; 

* Plan educational services and interventions for youths ages 12-18 considered at-risk.

Qualifications required

a) High-level educational staff, at the regional or national level, dealing with the target population, school principals, counselors, supervisors, lecturers at teacher training institutions, and researchers in relevant fields;

b) Be proficient in reading and writing in the language of instruction; (if the language of instruction is not the mother tongue, a certificate of language proficiency must be provided); 

c) Be not more than 50 years of age;  

Facilities offered by the MASHAV (Israel)

 Israel's Agency for International Development Cooperation (MASHAV) will assume costs relating to:

*Registration and tuition frees;

*Accommodation (Room and Board); and

*Health insurance and basic medical care (This does not include dental care, glasses, and chronic illnesses).

*Accommodations: Participants will reside at Ramat Rachel Hotel on the outslirts of Jerusalem 2 people per room.

Facilities offered by UNESCO

*UNESCO will cover international travel expenses (at the most economical airfare) within the framework of the 2014-2015 Fellowships Programme; and

* One-time special allowance amounting to US$100. 

(Note: Expenses such as the processing of visa, accommodation, meals and insurance during transit and/or prolonged stay in Israel are not covered by this fellowship.)
